NCPS Division Literacy Plan

Our School Division Literacy Vision:

Our vision is to create a community of learners that are adept in reading and writing skills based on the five components of literacy: comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness and fluency. We strive to implement a structured literacy approach that applies the science of reading, incorporating explicit, systematic, cumulative, diagnostic and responsive literacy practices.

Overview of Our Plan:

1. Access to Literacy Resources:

NCPS, in collaboration with Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP), will offer free, evidence-based literacy resources online for families to use at home. These resources will be shared via the NCPS website, social media, ClassTag, and parent communications. Parent engagement events, including Family Literacy Night and Title 1 meetings, will be scheduled throughout the 2024-2025 school year, with updates shared as dates are confirmed. The Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee will also receive presentations and give feedback on these initiatives.

2. Promoting Family Literacy through Partnerships:

NCPS partners with All District Reads to encourage reading at home. Through this program, each elementary student receives a free book to share with their family, promoting a shared reading experience. Community members participate by sponsoring the program and recording chapters for families. NCPS is preparing for the fourth book in the series to be introduced in Fall 2024.

3. Expanding Access with the NCPS Bookmobile:

To further support literacy, NCPS is launching a mobile "bookstore" – the NCPS Bookmobile. Set to debut in Fall 2024, the bookmobile will travel across the county, offering free books to students in grades PK-12 at various stops and events. The project is supported by community partnerships, including a high school student-led club, the local Rotary Club chapter, and grants.
