Machipongo, August 28th - Northampton County Public Schools (NCPS) is thrilled to announce that it is the receipt of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Award, which will enable us to launch a transformative after-school enrichment program for K-6 students at Occohannock Elementary and Kiptopeke Elementary.

Our efforts to begin this program on September 3rd have been postponed due to the Virginia Department of Education delaying its announcement of the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Awards. However, we are actively preparing so we can launch the program as soon as possible. Our new target date is September 16th, 2024.

This program will begin this school year and offer an array of enriching activities at no cost to students and their families. Thanks to the partnership of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, this marks a significant milestone as NCPS prepares to open the first licensed after-school care program in Northampton County.

The program will provide instructional enrichment and remediation through thematic units, health awareness, social-emotional learning, the arts, and family involvement. The YMCA will oversee the enrichment activities, while NCPS will handle the instructional components. Community partners, including parents and guardians, will contribute hands-on experiences, guest presentations, and career insights, making this a truly collaborative effort.

Designed to serve up to 98 students and their families at each school, the program aims to equip students with essential life skills, self-confidence, and a sense of responsibility for their futures. The collaborative efforts of teachers, YMCA-trained instructors, and community partners will mentor and inspire students to reach their highest potential.

The program will also emphasize mentoring and social-emotional well-being, which have been proven to enhance students' focus, transitions, and cooperation. Family engagement events will further support learning for both students and families.

With a unique focus of “Life on the Eastern Shore,” our thematic instructional units will integrate learning, literacy skills, career exploration, character education, and social awareness, all aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. Additionally, a summer after-school program will continue to support students and families, ensuring ongoing enrichment.

Thank you again for your understanding and interest in our After-School Program. We will continue to update you on our plans and progress for the start of this program.
